International FC Spring 2003

Internationals FC played in the Beach Adult Soccer League (BASL)

Sissine Office Systems 1 - Internationals 9

A new and improved Internationals FC routed Sissine`s 9-1. The return of Sergio

Lencina from Sunrise resulted in a hat trick for the Argentinean while (5) others got

on the score sheet. Newcomer Eddie Dramou found the net twice while team veterans

David Paris & Alejandro Quinteros added one each. Sissine`s pulled one back right

before half time via a penalty kick that was initially saved by keeper George

Mavrantzas, however he was deemed to move forward and the ensuing rekick was

converted. Gustavo Lopez and Percy Liendo ran up the total to add to a great day of

soccer for the Internationals.

DS United 4 - Internationals 1

DS United found their form in Week 2 with a 4-1 win over the Internationals. The

Internationals opened up the scoring against the run of play when Gustavo Lopez`s

shot was only deflected by Vladimir Zec and Sergio Lencina finished off the rebound

to increase his goal tally to (4) for the season. The lead was short lived when David

Podvia got a boot to a cross to beat Mavrantzas in goal. Right before halftime Paul

Tomarro got the game winner for DS United via a questionable penalty. The second

half found DS United controlling play and extending their lead through Netchko

Mimic and Nelson Geraldo. Internationals could have cut the lead however Eddie

Dramou`s close range drive was saved well by Vladimir Zec.

Internationals 3 - Cap`s United 2

In a physically contested match where several players were sent off, the Internationals

defeated Caps United 3-2. The Internationals were without star striker Sergio Lencina

and 53 year old midfielder David Paris, however they opened the scoring through

midfielder Alejandro Quintero. Quintero met a Gustavo Lopez cross at the back post

with a text book downward header that left keeper Scottie Johnson with no chance.

Quintero could have extended his lead several minutes later however his one on one

with Johnson was well saved and the follow up shot by Pablo Igliori could not beat

the Caps keeper. Dennis Kelly was unlucky for Caps not to get the equalizer when his

header met the crossbar and Brian Tennyson`s follow up header was punched clear by

Mavrantzas. The Internationals found the net again early in the second half when

Alejandro Quintero`s corner was headed brilliantly by Pablo Igliori to give the

Internationals a 2-0 lead. Caps however pulled one back when Michael Swan beat his

marker close to the touch line and his cross was met by Mike Howell to make the

score 2-1. The winning goal left the Caps defense spinning when Gustavo Lopez

collected an Alejandro Quintero through ball that saw him beat a defender and the

keeper for the 3-1 lead. Caps added one late when Dennis Kelly was pulled down in

the penalty area and Michael Swan`s penalty kick went in off of Mavrantzas` glove

for the 3-2 end result in favor of the Internationals.

Internationals 5 - PTC Computer Solutions Nets 0

The Internationals were able to manage the loss of (3) suspended players with a 5-0

victory over PTC Nets. They quickly opened the scoring in the second minute through

Argentine striker Sergio Lencina off an Alejandro Quintero pass. The stingy PTC

Nets defense kept out several chances, however Gustavo Lopez`s glancing header off

a David Paris cross left PTC keeper Sanny Rubio with little chance. The second half

opened with PTC increasing the pressure but Joey Romano`s low drive was kept out

by keeper George Mavrantzas. Lopez added his second from Sergio Lencina`s

rebound to make the score 3-0. PTC could have cut the lead when Zsolt Magyar was

deemed to be fouled in the box; however Sanny Rubio`s penalty was saved brilliantly

by the Greek international. David Paris, the oldest player to score in the BASL, added

a late header from an Alejandro Quintero cross. Lencina struck again late off an Eddie

Dramou ball to finish off the scoring.

Internationals 3 - Sunrise Surf Shop 2

Sunrise lost their undefeated record on a must win game for the Internationals.

Sunrise put on the pressure early and were rewarded through their leading scorer

Roman Kibelowicz. He went through alone on George Mavrantzas and beat the

keeper far post. Sunrise doubled the score when Jaime Cannon dribbled to the near

post and cut the ball back for Ben Trice who finished easily from the spot.

Internationals, feeling their playoff hopes out of reach, pulled one back right before

halftime when Alejandro Quintero`s cross was headed twice by Sergio Lencina and

past the hands of keeper Duane Heitzman. Gustavo Lopez almost got the equalizer,

however his shot just barely missed the mark. The second half saw more trouble for

the Internationals when Xavier Arias was shown the red card and they were left to

play with 10 men. Zoltan Takos also fell to an injury to his knee. Regardless, the

equalizer came when Gustavo Lopez finished a Victor Duncan pass to level the score

at 2-2. The winning goal came 20 minutes before time when Franco Guererro

brilliantly set up Argentine striker Sergio Lencina to go ahead. The Internationals held

off an aggressive Sunrise until the end with Justin Morgan missing by inches for the

tie.

Internationals 1 - Uncle Charlies 0

In another must win, the Internationals left it late against Uncle Charlie`s. With great

performances by both goalkeepers the first half was almost evenly matched. Jose

saved the Internationals best chance from a hard drive from Gustavo Lopez while

Jonathan Soriash`s floating shot skimmed the top of the crossbar was Uncle Charlie`s

best opportunity. The second half was wide open as the chances began to come from

both sides. Bosnian striker Ibro should have opened the scoring for Uncle Charlie`s

but his one on one was saved brilliantly by keeper George Mavrantzas. Minutes later

Mavrantzas equaled the task by denying Goran after he dribbled in on the near post.

Jose kept a clean sheet with a key save on Sergio Lencina. However, the goal came

after creative work from Alejandro Quintero who was brought down in the box with

10 minutes to play. The Greek goalkeeper stepped up to take the penalty and sent Jose

the wrong way for the 1-0 lead and his fourth goal of the season. The Internationals

had to weather a tremendous storm by Uncle Charlie`s that last 10 minutes with

Mavrantzas making 3 key saves late to maintain the shutout. Uncle Charlies should

have had the equalizer in injury time though Goran`s shot from 6 yards met the legs

of Mavrantzas.

Internationals 8 Sticky Fingers-Sliders 0

The Internationals finished the season strong with (3) straight wins following a win

against a short manned Sticky Fingers side. Their 8-0 win guaranteed qualification

into the playoffs joining Sunrise, DS United, and Uncle Charlie`s. Paul Pavich, the

UNF defender, opened the scoring with an assist from his college counterpart Victor

Duncan. Sergio Lencina, needing (4) goals to win the golden boot yet again, found the

net incredibly a total of (6) times to accomplish this great feat. He scored goals from

every angle including a brilliant free kick and a penalty. Victor Duncan also scored to

continue the Internationals control of the match. Goalkeeper George Mavrantzas

recorded only his 3rd shutout this season and was only tested a couple of times while

creative midfielder Alejandro Quintero added two assists. The Internationals look

forward to continuing their good run of play with their meeting against Sunrise in the

semifinals; a team they had to beat this season to qualify for the playoffs.

Regular Season Summary

Another season has come to an end with the (4) top teams advancing to the playoffs. DS United could not continue their run of good fortune at the

league level though they continue to impress with their victories at the State & Regional tournaments. The defending league champs dropped

matches to Costa Rica of the second division, this year's league winners Sunrise, and a last minute draw to Caps to finish second this year. Sunrise

who missed last year's playoff tournament had consistent play throughout the year to win the league. Their only loss of the season was a 3-2 defeat

by a 10 man Internationals side. Uncle Charlie's & Internationals tied for third on points, however Uncle Charlie's takes the (3) seed based on goal

differential. Uncle Charlie's could not avoid a bad run of luck with 1-0 defeats from Sunrise, DS United, & the Internationals this year. However,

they made sure to take care of business with everyone else. The Internationals, who seem to be coming together at the right time, had to win their

last (4) games to advance. Disappointing losses to DS United (1-4), Uniques (2-3), Dolphin Home Mortgage (2-5), and a draw with Lynch's (2-2)

saw their playoff hopes ruined. However, must needed wins against Sunrise (3-2) and Uncle Charlie's (1-0) assured classification while

eliminating Dolphin Home Mortgage. Dolphin Home Mortgage could not get the points needed to move on though they were able to beat the

Internationals and draw against Uncle Charlie's during the regular season. Uniques FC showed moments of contention with impressive victories

over the Internationals & Dolphin Home Mortgage. And what can we say - the fall and demise of both Caps & Sisinne's. Who knows the future of

the Caps squad while Sissine's will be relegated to the second division. On the final match day we saw Sunrise edge out DS United for the league

championship and the International's striker Sergio Lencina needed (4) goals to win the golden boot once again. He scored (6) times against Sticky

Fingers to add the title to his accolades.
